The First Day of Competition
The first day of competition at the 23rd annual USASA Championships saw sunny skies and insane competition throughout each venue. Despite unseasonable temperatures, rising to the low 60’s, the alpine courses and pipe, as it is being cut every night, held up nicely all morning. Coaches, competitors, and parents commented on the quality of the special course builds. Coach Travis Mclain from Aspen commented “I am impressed with how well all the venues are riding. Its cool that USASA builds custom courses especially for this event.”
With 1705 registered competitors the 23rd Annual USASA National Championship began at Copper Mountain. The commencement ceremony kicked off with athletes, representing 32 regional series, parading into the awards venue. Elan Fleetwood, a 9 year old Grommet Girl’s competitor, sang the national anthem officially starting the week’s competitions. Wing Lam was awarded the prestigious founders award for his last 18 years of service at USASA Nationals.
Faye Gulini: Heading to Nationals
It has been a while since I last wrote so I have plenty to tell you about. After the Canyons event I went straight to Canada for a World Cup race where I got my best World Cup result. I placed 5th! After Canada I went to Europe for 3 weeks. There I competed in 2 World Cup races and Junior Worlds. I placed 10th in both the World Cups and 4th and Junior Worlds.
ATTENTION! Rail Jam Practice Changed!
Due to very warm temperatures expected at Copper, practice is cancelled on the Rail Jam venue on Saturday and all the daytime practice sessions scheduled for Sunday through Thursday are also cancelled. Athletes will have practice time the night of their event from 6 to 7pm, with competition starting at 7pm.
The temperatures are so warm that the course simply will not hold up with that much traffic during the day. Instead, we will keep the course in pristine condition for the night events so the athletes have the ideal setup for competition. The Lil' Rascals Rail Jam will still take place on Monday from 1pm-3pm.
The Daily Event Schedule PDF has been updated with these changes and can be downloaded from the Nationals pages.
