USASA announces AFP Silver Level Sanction

USASA announces AFP Silver Level Sanction for 2014 National Championships

February 25, 2014. The USASA and The Association of Freeskiing Professionals (AFP) have announced that the 2014 USASA Ski National Championships at Copper Mountain, Colorado have been granted Silver Level sanctioning.

Commenting on the Silver level status of the event, USASA Executive Director Pete Davis stated, "We are excited to have earned AFP Silver Level status for our Silver Anniversary, 25th Annual National Championships at Copper Mountain. The venues are in great shape and we hope to see full rosters in all classes of the events that we'll be presenting for our ski athletes April 5th through 9th." The USASA Ski National Championships will feature skiercross, rail jam, slopestyle and halfpipe competitions over the five days in April. The AFP sanctioned events follow the USASA Snowboard National Championships that begin on March 29th and end on April 4th.

Davis continued, "We witnessed some incredible skiing at the USASA National Championships last year. Seeing skiers who earned podiums at Copper in 2013, make it to the Olympics in Sochi this winter demonstrated how high the bar has risen at this event. Seeing the caliber of athlete competing at the USASA National Championships, it was a logical progression for the AFP to sanction the event at the Silver level. We are very excited to work with their team moving forward."

AFP Executive Director, Eric Zerrenner added, "The AFP has worked with and supported USASA for years. Their regional programs focused on youth participation in competitive freeskiing is essential for the growth of our sport, and has proven to be a successful path to the Olympic stage - demonstrated by last year's National Halfpipe Champion Lyman Currier. With added resources and expected increase in participation, the AFP is pleased to elevate the 2014 Nationals to a Silver Level AFP event."

Organized, managed and communicated by the AFP, the World Ranking System is made possible by a network of AFP-sanctioned events - the AFP World Tour. Through the global organization and consistency of judging, competition schedule and event sanctioning requirements, the AFP helped halfpipe and slopestyle skiing gain Olympic acceptance at the 2014 Winter Olympic Games in Sochi.

A3/ USASA Road Trip Feb 3 thru 10

The SIA Trade show in Denver and associated travels to Summit County took up the bulk of this week, with out of office travel.  The indoor portion of the show lasted from Jan. 30-Feb. 2nd and our team arrived Jan. 29th for set up.  Following the show, the on-snow demo took place in Copper Feb. 3rd and 4th, during which time, Zippy Neil and I met with Copper and other groups in and around Summit County.  Bad weather across the nation delayed my return to Vermont until 2:00 AM, Thursday, Feb. 6tha3van

The Empire State Games that took place over the weekend of Feb. 8 & 9th, is a statewide event that encompasses virtually all winter sports.  Hockey, Figure Skating, Alpine ski racing, Nordic races, snowboard, etc. are all presented for kids from all over the Empire State.  The USASA manages the snowboard events over the weekend, presenting Cross (skier and boarder cross racing) and Slopestyle.

As Lake Placid and nearby Whiteface Mountain are Olympic venues ( 1932 and 1980 ), the energy and enthusiasm for the competitive events being presented was at an all time high.  The first day of Olympic results from Sochi,  with USA rider Sage Kostenburg winning men’s Slopestyle, generated quite a buzz around Whiteface.  The A3 van made the trip to Whiteface on Saturday for the Cross events and was afforded high-profile parking spot in a requested, pre-arranged location for maximum visibility of the branded van during the event.

A3 Bars and tee shirts were distributed during the Awards Ceremony at the end of the day and kids, parents and coaches were stoked.
