How can a family attend Nationals with children that do both??? This creates an impossible situation. Please change it back!

The decision to add 2 more competition days to Nationals in order to accommodate our ski members and snowboard members appropriately was not taken lightly. We took into consideration everything we could including families with both skiers and snowboarders. Of our database of 6,483 members, roughly 50 families appear to have both a skier and a snowboarder. This number is less than 1 percent of the total membership, and of those 50 families it is impossible to know how many will even have someone qualified for Nationals.

In reality, we shortened the time a snowboarder will need to be at Nationals by 1 day and only added 2 competition days to what we have had previous years. We have given Skiers their own event with their own practice day and room to invite more athletes. The entire event timeframe is now 12 days rather than 10 and unless you are qualified for all 5 disciplines as a snowboarder you are not required to be at Nationals for more than a 5 day window. If you are a family with a snowboarder qualified for all 5 events and a skier qualified for all 3 events then you will need to be there a total of 11 days, 4 more than last year, assuming you come for the first practice day. Most likely, the only people that will need to be at Nationals for more than a 5 or 6 day window will be the staff.

While not ideal, it is not impossible for a family to attend if they have children that do both, it just means staying longer. The Snowboard weather day in between the two "events" can be considered a day off to freeride/ski or just relax and enjoy the area. If it is not used as a weather day it may become an extra practice day for the skiers.

Bottom line, this was inevitable and needed to be done for the best interest of all of our members. Because of the growth of both sports the numbers just got too big to stuff everyone into a 6 day window and still provide the highest quality event for everyone. The new format allows for all qualified athletes to have the best possible experience at Nationals.

When would the actual days of competition for each age bracket and event be announced? This would help with scheduling especially in light of this change. thanks.

Creating the competition groups and days is very difficult until the season is under way, when we know how many athletes we actually have competing in each age group and discipline. Without those statistics, we would literally be guessing and could end up with a schedule that does not work for the amount of people that actually need to fit into Nationals.

We usually get this done and posted by January, last year we announced on January 5th.

Have to agree with Nancy this is a bad situation we have a skier and a snowboarder ,we live at the other end of the country so going back and forth is not possible ,basically we probably will not do nationals as it is not fair to pick one child's event over the other .I am sure this was a great solution for locals but it is the worst possible scenario for those of us from a distance sorry I did not see this thread earlier before I bought non refundable airline tickets
