The first day of USASA Ski Nationals competition was a huge success! We had some weather issues towards the end of the day, but the skiers and the staff pushed on to finish it out.
We had a great show above the village in the halfpipe, showcasing our Open Class and 19 and over athletes. Peter Crook took the gold medal in Open Class, which also means that he is taking home not only a gold medal, but also $1,000! Close behind him on the podium were Aaron Blunck and Lyman Currier, both taking medals and $500 and $250, respectively. These athletes are also now part of the Association of Freeskiing Professionals (AFP) rankings! For Open Class women, also taking home money and AFP points, were Maddie Bowman in first, Kendall Deighan in second, and Annalise Johnson in third.
Westward on the skiercross course we had girls and boys age 12 and under. It was easy to tell that the kids were having a lot of fun. There was some impressive racing for athletes of this age going on all day!
Slopestyle had the largest group, both men and women aged 13 to 18. There were some awesome runs thrown down that will be hard for the Open Class athletes to compete with on Tuesday.
All in all, the very first day of our exclusive ski competition went very well! We still have day 2 and 3 to look forward to, and some good weather in the forecast!
