Today marked the first day for the 2011 USASA Ski Nationals. This is also the very first year that Ski Nationals is an exclusive event; in the past, Ski Nationals has always been integrated with USASA’s snowboard event. Thus, skiers of all ages practiced in halfpipe, slopestyle, and skiercross throughout the day, while taking some time off tonight for opening ceremonies.
Practice was open today from 9:00 am until 3:30 pm in each venue. The weather was variable with clouds quickly turning to sun and vice versa. However, everyone was very excited about his or her day. Regardless if you were watching at the venues or seeing the competitor bibs from the chairlift, it was easy to notice the smiles all over the mountain.
At 5:00 pm tonight, all of the athletes gathered and staged for Opening Ceremonies. Each of the nearly-500 skiers assembled into their respective regions and paraded into Burning Stones Plaza for spectators. Opening Ceremonies kicks off what will be 3 exciting days of ski competition from April 10th – 12th.
