Today’s weather was amazing; about 35 and generally sunny the entire day! It was perfect conditions for both free-riding and competing alike. Thus, open class and PacSun Team riders had an awesome day in the halfpipe this afternoon. The PacSun Team women cleaned house with Kelly Marren taking 1st place and Jenna Dramise taking 2nd. Faye Gulini took 5th place Mikaela Casey ended up in 7th. Kelly received an additional award at the end of the day—Cholula’s Hot Trick of the Day! From Kelly: “It was a great event today. It was so good to see that the weather held up and that the girls were pushing the limits of their riding.”

Men’s halfpipe competitors put on an amazing show. The competition was tough, but the USASA PacSun team ended up with 3 people in finals. Tyler Anderson took 10th, Benji Farrow took 8th, and Taylor Gold walked away with a silver medal! We also had Trevor Jacob in 12th place.

Tomorrow (April 8th) is slopestyle for our open class competitors. Mikaela Casey stated that “I’m really excited for slopestyle tomorrow because the jumps are super good and my practice went well.”

In addition, we had our Monster Mash halfpipe competition today. In conjunction with USASA Nationals, an invite-only event halfpipe event went down at Copper Mountain. The event featured several Olympians, and X Games competitors including Danny Kass, JJ Thomas, Chad Otterstrom, Brennen Swanson, and Matt Ladley. All of the athletes have come up through USASA. It was an amazing show that attracted quite the crowd! In the end, JJ Thomas won the jam-format event, and Danny Kass won the "Best Run" award. $5,000 will be awarded in JJ's name to USASA from Monster Energy. After the event, Danny commented, "It was totally awesome to come out here and compete with people of our level at the same time as all the amateur snowboarders. It is great to see the next generation of snowboarding. The kids are coming up hot!"

Today was the first day of competition for all venues except for GS! Thus, we have named several new National Champions/gold medalists! Congrats to all of our podium finishers as well as everyone who competed today! The weather was amazing, the sponsor village was full and lively, and there were thousands of smiles to be seen all over the mountain! We still have several days of competition left; we can only hope that every day goes as smoothly as today. Again, congrats to everyone who has been competing!!

The highlight of today was the opening ceremonies. We began with the kickoff of the sponsor village, followed by presentation of each of our 32 series, who marched through the village and into the Burning Stones Plaza. Practice day was also today, and although it was windy at many venues, there was very positive feedback about practice day. Competition kicks off tomorrow with all events except for GS. Good luck to all the competitors!!!
