Snowboardcross NorAM Finals Decided at 2016 USASA National Championships
The 2016 NorAM Snowboard Boardercross title was on the line Sunday at Copper Mountain in the final event of the USSA’s Hole Shot Tour NorAM Series. An international field, including five US Team members and an Olympian tackled Copper’s purpose-built boardercross venue. Sunday’s race was contested as part of the Open Class competition at the USASA’s 27th annual National Championships. The dual sanctioning of the OPEN Class events represents a cooperative effort between the USASA, the USSA, and Copper Mountain Resort.
US rider, Cole Johnson, claimed the NorAm title with his fourth place finish in the last race of the season. His margin over runner-up and fellow US competitor, Robert Minghini, was 225 points.
Defending NorAm champion, Rosina Mancari, led the US women with her second place finish in the 2016 standings. She was fifth in Sunday’s event. Canadian, Meryeta Odine earned the women’s NorAm title.

Japanese competitor, Shinya Momono (center) won the final men’s NorAm event over US riders, Mike Dierdorff (left) and Alex Diebold (right).
Diebold was the bronze medalist at the Olympic Games in Sochi, Russia. A pair of Americans, Johnson and Devryn Valley completed the top five.

Karen Iwadare (center), also from Japan, completed that country’s sweep of the top podium position. American rider, Danielle Steinhoff (left) captured the silver and Annabel Tudhope (right) from Australia earned bronze.
US competitors, Yoshi Knowles and Mancari rounded out the top five.
The official commencement of the 27th Annual USASA National Championships took place Saturday, (April 2) following a full day of practice for the athletes across five disciplines - Slopestyle, Halfpipe, Slalom, Giant Slalom and Boardercross. A large throng lined the walkways of Copper Resort's Center Village to watch the opening ceremonies which began with a parade of athletes from the 31 Regional Series. As of the start of the parade, USASA administration reported that 1235 snowboard athletes had registered to compete. Six hundred and twenty-one skiers had also checked in for their National Championships which begin on Saturday, April 9 with practice.
Athletes from the 31 Regional Series who will participate in the 2016 edition of the National Championships represent 41 states, and eight foreign countries (Australia, New Zealand, Korea, France, Italy, Japan, Great Britain and Canada, with four of its 10 provinces representing).

The 2017 USASA National Championships will score the Open Class Skiercross races as a FIS race. The dual sanctioning of these OPEN Class events represents a cooperative effort between the USASA, the USSA and Copper Mountain Resort. An international roster of athletes is expected to compete at the events.
ALL competitors will recieve a 7 of 10 day lift ticket for Copper Mountain with their entry fee, which also includes the official training day. This will allow every competitor to ride 7 days out of 10 starting on April 1st, 2017.
Up to $10,000 of prize money is available to be awarded for the 2017 USASA National Championships Open Class events. Prize purse is based, by gender on the number of competitors in the field of the discipline.
