(January 8th, 2021)--United States of America Snowboard and Freeski Association (USASA), along with Copper Mountain, a POWDR resort, announced today that the annual USASA National Championships, originally scheduled for March 26th-April 8th 2021, has been canceled in support of COVID-19 safety regulations and guidelines. Both organizations are optimistic that the event will be able to be held in the 2021-2022 season.

This historic two-week long celebration of the USASA competition season had been held continuously for 30 years before the streak abruptly ended last year due to COVID-19. Each year the USASA celebrates the top freeski and snowboard athletes from all 31 USASA series with coveted invites to the Championship event. The largest event in the world of its kind, this annual celebration hosts over 1000 athletes each week across all age groups, competing in halfpipe, slopestyle, cross, and rail jam, as well as giant slalom and slalom for snowboarders.

“This was a very difficult decision to make and we looked at a multitude of options to try to keep the event viable for the season,” said Michael Mallon, Executive Director of the USASA  “The health and safety of the athletes, families, and the Copper community guided our decision-making process. We weighed heavily the impact of bringing thousands of athletes, staff, and families from all parts of the country to Copper. As we continue to monitor the state of COVID in the US we felt that taking another year off is the safest path forward. ” In the meantime, USASA is working on a virtual platform to help create more opportunities for regional exhibitions and will share more information as it becomes available.

“Competitions and youth development are fundamental to what we do here at Copper Mountain,” said Dustin Lyman, president and general manager of Copper Mountain. “We look forward to welcoming the USASA National Championships back in the future.”

The USASA 2020-2021 season will be extended to April 18th and USASA Regional Events are being held across the nation when possible. This allows USASA athletes more opportunities to compete regionally and gain National Ranking points for the end of season awards. USASA will recognize the top athletes across all disciplines and age groups with special 2020-2021 prize packs and memorabilia.
