Located smack dab in the middle of Tahoe’s best winter resorts Sierra Nevada College offers something most colleges don’t, freeskiing. Developed nearly a decade ago, The Sierra Nevada College Freeski Team is one of a handful of programs worldwide that give students the opportunity to pursue a competitive freeskiing career alongside a full time college education. A testament to this program and opportunity, X Games and Olympic gold medalist, Maddie Bowman, is a full time biology major at SNC.

“It’s important for us to offer athletes and students an opportunity to pursue both their love of freeskiing as well as a robust college education to set them up for a future that includes a healthy balance of both,” says Dr. Alan Walker, President of Sierra Nevada College, and avid NASTAR competitor. Sierra Nevada College is one of the few colleges that offers scholarship and financial aid for the Freeski Team.  “The athletes are good students and put a lot of effort in to both.” SNC junior and USASA South Tahoe Series competitor, Cole Lyons says, “Day in day out we’re doing school, going to Woodward and this crew is motivated in both aspects on and off the hill”.

While the early season is spent honing skills at the Woodward Tahoe Bunker, a week in the life of a typical SNC Freeski team member in winter looks like this, Tuesdays and Thursdays are full school days with classes running into the evenings and Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays are spent at one of the nearby resorts. The extended weekend also give athletes looking to travel to events an opportunity to never miss a class.  Athletes who join the team get free passes at Diamond Peak, 1 mile from campus, along with discounted Epic and Ikon passes giving students over 5 resorts to choose from on any given ski day. And the flexibility of scheduling allows SNC athletes to be on snow as much as possible and leaves plenty of time to complete school work when off days arise.
